Ele:WoM – Afterthoughts on Peashaskas

Well, where to start. That’s easy. I start by uninstalling the game. I’m pretty certain thatElemental: War of Magicis the worst game I’ve ever completed.

A picture is worth a thousand words

A few other thoughts follow below.

Ele:WoM – The Rebirth of Peashaskas (Chapter 7)

Hello. You rejoin me just as I’m doing a spot of gardening. Magical gardening. Probably better described as terraforming. Magical terraforming. I’m not really sure why all these spells are in the game (and a lot of them are available very early) as the AI seems to have enough trouble without human players creating and destroying mountains all over the place. And sadly, you can’t destroy enemy cities by plunging them into the sea. And I can’t think of a reason why you’d ever want to raise an island out of the sea: a waste of previous mana that could otherwise be used for casting that tediousarcane arrow spell again and again. And I don’t think mountains do anything (unlike say, Alpha Centauri, which had a whole weather system built in). But lets forget about that. I haven’t used these spells all game, and one of my cities is trying to expand up the side of the mountain. It looks messy. So…

Such powers, man should not weild.

Ka-boom. And Esuebark now has room to expand. Well, that was pointless. Continue reading

Ele:WoM – The Rebirth of Peashaskas (Chapter 6)

The map, Summer 219AC

Ok, I’m even starting to get tired of Elemental’s lovely cloth map: the city names are hard to read when you zoom out due to lack of contrast. And the national borders don’t show up very well. But I hope you can make out from the map that the Kraxis Empire is nearly no more. Just a few remaining settlements clinging on in the north. Here’s hoping I can finish them off. I’ve managed to research some weaponry, so my new troops should have more of a bite. It looks like warstaffs are the best available option. I wonder when the magic great swords of certain doom will make an appearance. And on the magic side of things (as this is, after all, a War of Magic) I think I finally have a replacement for arcane arrow, namely a touch of entropy. Sadly it uses quite a bit more mana, so I’d better capture some more shards.

Developing Perontor 5 – Camera Controls

Ok, just a quick update… as there’s not a huge amount to show. Turns out the reason so many games have crap camera controls is because camera controls are quite hard to program. Especially when your camera is orbiting a world. Anyway, I’ve got that working now…. the camera rotates around the globe when you move the mouse to the edge of the screen. And you can zoom and an out. It’s not perfect, but it’s not any worse than some efforts I’ve seen in commercial games.

I’ve also started work towards implementing the ability to have more than 1 faction. Hopefully it won’t be too long til I have an incredibly simple, but playable exe 🙂

Ele:WoM – The Rebirth of Peashaskas (Chapter 5)

Ok, here’s the longer chapter I promised. The map below shows the current lie of the land:

Sadly, it's a little hard to make out city names when you zoom out.

Sadly, it's a little hard to make out city names when you zoom out.

although the “faction power” scores suggest the Kraxis are winning, I’m not entirely sure if that’s very accurate: You can see the two cities I’ve taken from them in the north of the map. However, I do feel a little stretched out, and I still haven’t managed to accumulate enough resources to build some of my mighty red feet (a custom unit I designed ages ago). Time to shore up the Kingdom and tax the hello out of my subjects. (Although, I’m yet to discover any way of changing the tax rate.) My magical research is coming along though, and I’ve now unlocked the book of water, allowing me to research water spells. Sadly, the choice appears to be pretty limited: grip of winter appears to be the best option, and that turns out to be useless. (Why waste a turn casting a spell for a 25% chance of making an enemy unit miss a turn, when instead, I can cast my trusty arcane arrow?)

Ele:WoM – The Rebirth of Peashaskas (Chapter 4)

Along with the settlment of Hiiliesplav (recently taken from the Kraxis Empire) I have another new addition to my Kingdom, the lovely Raline.

Yet another hireable character

Raline is promptly hired to join my cause, and I decide to try out the imbue spell, which means she gains the ability to cast spells. In hindsight, this turns out to be a bad move on my part as Raline is too stupid to cast even my lowly arcane arrow spell. So much for that. Luckily, I have another use for her.

Developing Perontor 4

Ok, nothing too exciting to report, but I’ve been working on some more “plumbing,” namely, the ability to save a world and then reload it. I’ve got this working: although I should explore if it’s possible to just save the random number generator’s seed (answer is probably not, as I might allow for the world to be terraformed in-game).

An exciting main menu
