My plans for Geneve are poorly thought out: in his wisdom Kaiser Gunzelin the Good has ruled that vassals may not wage war against each other. So be it. Truth be told, the notion left a bitter taste. I have a much better idea now, I do not know why I did not think of it earlier: Count Andreas has only a daughter, the charming Osterhild de Geneve. It seems like a match should be made with Gilbert, my second son.

My, where does the time go? Most of the summer has been spent worrying about the situation in Scilly. But now, the all mighty has blessed us and the men have returned home. May the new pope smile on my people as the old pope did.

Dear Diary, today is the day my life begins anew. My father’s father’s brother’s son’s son has died and through either some quirk of fate, or the hand of the all mighty, I find myself Acfred’s titles. I find myself now Duchess Elisa, Countess of Provance, Forcalquier and Savoy, Barones of Grimaud and Nyons. While it is not a woman’s place to rule, there appears to be no other option, with Acred’s son, Acrfed being only nine years of age. And we are at war.

I immediately offer my services to the pope in his crusade, Jerusalem sorely needs our intervention to right God’s presence. While waiting on his acceptance, I discover that my liege is fighting his own holy war for the duchy of Sicili! He has a vast army raised but my own effort would surely be missed if I didn’t join in.

Bertrand II: 1094-1102
As the learned Bishop Evrard of Aix tells me, it is spoken among the learned heathens of a man named Sisyphus, who was cursed by the devils that the ancients called “gods” before the revelation of Christ. For rebuke of his cleverness, which leads even the wise astray, Sisyphus had to push a boulder up a hill, in the full knowledge that it would roll down the other side once he had reached its crest. He was bound thus for all eternity, until we shall all made whole again with the Second Coming. Evrard is fond of offering to me this tale, when I meditate on the path that the line of Boso has taken down through history. He is a wise man, I know, because I appointed him myself. Count no man happy until he is dead. If that is the case, my child Garcia is now happier than I have ever been, after only six months of life. I am unsure if the infants of Purgatory are Catholic doctrine yet, but if they are, I wish him a swift passage through the darkness and to the throne of glory. Amen.
Immediately I am already disappointed with my prospects. Nothing about my living situation says “royal” right now. I am married to Mathilde de Provence, a local noblewoman of no account either to me or to anyone else. The truth is, though I love my natural daughter, she was conceived out of wedlock and I married dear Mathilde, the most boring person under heaven, to preserve the honor of us all. Some years later, I am less than thrilled with my decision.
